Farberware Classic 12-Inch Fry Pan with Lid and Helper Handle Review

I’ve been using this pan for seven years. I confess, I originally bought it because I was sick of my Hamburger Helper boiling over all the time. But as I’ve become a better cook, I’ve come to appreciate how great this pan really is. It takes longer to heat up (maybe 10-15 minutes) because it’s so thick on the bottom and because you can only put the heat up to medium. But it gets burning hot even on that lower heat, and it’s evenly hot, even on my electric range. It’s hard to burn anything in this pan–you have to actually forget that you had something on the stove. (Not that I’ve done that, ha ha.) This was my first pan that wasn’t a non-stick, and I was worried about clean-up, but clean-up is easy–I’ve never needed to use anything but a kitchen sponge to get it perfectly clean. The paper that came with it said you could put it in the dishwasher, but I don’t–it’s too big. I use it to sear steaks, cook stews, make chicken tiki marsala, fajitas, etc. As I’ve become a better cook, I haven’t needed anything but this same pan. About once a year I need to tighten the screw on the handle, but I’ve had no other problems with it whatsoever.

I am in the market for a new one now that my trusty old one has passed on after 8 years of hard service… But I see that several people have had complaints of it burning rice and being unreliable… This leads me to wonder whether the one I bought was an earlier generation, made in a different factory perhaps? Household current can also vary, as in my current house, my slow cooker burns everything. I am scratching my head about this, and wondering if I just got lucky? Mine was reliable and gave perfect results every time for 8 years! Maybe I will see if Consumer Reports rates it to detect changes in generation.

Addendum: I decided to pass on ever again using a rice cooker or bread machine once I learned that they all have teflon (or the Japanese patented nonstick coating that is exactly the same chemical, but with a different name) and I will not knowingly ingest anything cooked on or in a teflon coating ever again. It is easy enough to make rice on the stove by following directions, and making bread by hand is easy too. There are even overnight refrigerator and no-knead recipes for those who don’t want to spend any time doing it. So since I couldn’t get such devices without teflon coatings, I will do without them. And it’s that much less clutter in the kitchen, and that much less use of electricity.

I picked this set up in 2004 because it was on sale for 20 bucks. My majic chef II (infomercial brand) set that I recieved as a gift were finally starting to show their age (and inferior quality). So after two years the farberware set finally came out of the box about 8 months ago. So far I’ve been very impressed with their feel, quality, and cut. I haven’t had to sharpen any of them yet. The steak knives do feel a bit light in one’s hand, but the serrate is sharp and deep so it cuts STEAK extremely well. The steak knives are not well suited to cut most food because the serrates are so deep. I often have to remind myself that they are designed to cut steak, and they do that very well. The larger knives feel well balanced and have held their edge very well thus far. Sure, there are better knife sets out there. But even at the current fifty dollar price tag, this set would rival many costing much more. 5 stars is for the quality/value ratio.
